Rocket Bat Hotels and Owl Boxes

PROJECT OVERVIEW

To boost the biodiversity on the estate and to promote wildlife, it was approved to install Owl boxes, Rocket bat Hotels as well as Barbet nesting logs.

There are Barn owls and Spotted eagle owls in the area, and we would like to encourage them to take up residency in the estate.

Apart from being a “nice to have”, Owls assist greatly with the control of rodents.

The rocket bat hotels, on the other hand, promotes Bats to take up residence at the estate. Most of the bat hotels were placed near the internal dams as bats are extremely good at controlling mosquitoes.

Barbet nesting logs were placed on tree branches within the common areas of the estate, for residence to watch and enjoy the barbets coming and going. Barbets diets consists mainly of insects.

The map below shows the location of 5 owl boxes. Circled in white for the barn owl boxes and in red for the spotted eagle owl boxes.

The map below indicates all the locations for the Rocket bat hotels for phase 1, boxed in a white square.

A total of 15 barbet nesting logs were installed in and around the common areas at Pecanwood. The installations are done at a height of about 3m on a 45-degree angle. Please find a table below detailing the installation areas:
